Best Focus recce competition at Karup Air Base

 

Canberra PR 9, XH136 from No. 1 PRU. This aircraft was used for taking reference target photos during the 1982 Best Focus recce competition at Karup Air Base. When it arrived it belonged to 39 Sqn but while it was deployed to Karup the unit was disbanded and aircraft and personnel were handed over to No. 1 Photo Reconnaissance Unit. The ground crew of this particular Canberra ’celebrated’ the event by painting over the red 39 Sqn winged bomb on the tail and painted a matchstick man with an umbrella (allegedly featured in a TV commercial for the Prudential Insurance Company at the time).
