The end in sight

During its 55 years in service, thousands of people have worked on or flown the EE Canberra but sadly by the end of the 1980's and 1990's this great aircraft was up for disposal and many of the Canberras that were not lucky to be preserved were reduced to scrap or being reduced to nose sections, below are some pictures showing this.

On the line at RAF Wyton is ex 100 squadron TT18 WH718 CW, this once proud aircraft was scrapped in August 1992

This Canberra B2 WH703 ended its life as a BDRF and was given the maintance number 8490M, she was later scrapped in March 1994 at Pendine sands ranges.

1982 at Cosford WJ640 ex 100 squadron being broken up.

Canberras waiting at RAF Wyton with the dreaded blue cross on the noses, these Canberras were ex 100,231,360 squadron, these photos were taken in 1993.

WH887 ex FRADU at RAF Llanbedr , this aircraft last flew in 1994 and was placed on the fire dump awaiting the scrapman . In 2004 WH887 was scrapped with only the nose being saved , the nose section is now kept with her new owners at the former RAF Upwood base in Cambridgeshire where she once flew in the 1950's with 542 squadron and station flight.

 

WJ775 B6 MOD RC

WJ775 was one of 51 Sqd's four modifed B.6 Canberras . This modified B.6 was first delivered to 192 Sqd at RAF Watton and was then moved to 51 Sqd at RAF Wyton, Both these squadrons were "wiggly amps" outfits .However, WJ775 eventually ended its ECM career and was transferred to Central Servicing Development Establishment (1974) subsequently becoming ground instructional airframe number 8581M in 1977 at Swanton Morley, in 1993 she then went to Bodney Camp used as a passive target, this picture shows her in Feburary 2009 at Bodney Camp just before her nose section was removed for preservation. WJ775 is now kept at former RAF Upwood .

 

WJ981 T17 'EN'

WJ981 was built August 1953, converted to T17 in May 1967,she was later converted to a T17A. WJ981 was put up for disposal and sold for £3000 on the 26th November 1994 and later scrapped on th 27th August 1995.

Canberra T17 WH902 'EK' on the dump at RAF Wyton was put up for tender March 1995 and scrapped a couple of months after this photo was taken.

A very sad sight 2 T17's on the deck and lying like drunken fish .....to the left is WH646 'EG' and the other is WJ986 'EP'. WH646 was scrapped in January 1995 with the nose section going to Coventry air museum, WJ986 was scrapped January 1995 and nothing remains.
